The quarterly MPIR only affects new admissions. Once you enter residential aged care, the MPIR on your admission date is locked permanently. Read our full MPIR explainer for details.

2. What Drives MPIR Changes?

The MPIR is not set arbitrarily. It is calculated using a statutory formula: the 90-day bank accepted bill rate plus a fixed margin of 3.0 percentage points. This means:

  • When the Reserve Bank raises the cash rate, short-term money market rates typically rise, and the MPIR follows upward at the next quarterly reset.
  • When the cash rate falls, the MPIR generally declines at the following quarterly determination.
  • The 3.0% margin is fixed by legislation and does not change with economic conditions.

Because the MPIR tracks market rates with a quarterly lag, families planning an admission near a quarter boundary (e.g. late September vs early October) can face different rates. The difference between 8.43% and 8.51% on a $600,000 room is about $1.32 per day, or roughly $480 per year.

3. How Rate Changes Affect Your DAP

Every 0.10 percentage point movement in the MPIR changes the daily DAP by approximately $0.27 per $100,000 of unpaid RAD. On a typical $550,000 metropolitan room paid entirely by DAP:

MPIR Daily DAP on $550k Room Annual Cost
8.51% (current) $128.23 $46,804
8.43% $127.03 $46,365
8.38% $126.27 $46,090
